Fashion
A couple of nights ago i was out to dinner with Michael and he asked whether i was going to start wearing the local style clothing. This was about my third day in HK. I moved my hair and showed him the halterneck top under the t-shirt. I wish i could show you a picture (but i'm too lazy to look) but that is the latest fashion here at the moment. To which he remarked 'Already! I still havn't got used to it'. With me shopping every day, more and more of my wardrobe is being replaced with the lastest Honky fashion. I love it.
It should probably be noted however that i'm yet to buy any skirts, pants or shoes in Hong Kong. All of which i am bound to have some trouble with.
Today i'm in search for some evening/going out clothes.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There is at least one good Mexican place in HK. I had basically gave up on finding it after my inital try in April when i visited. But i found it: last night. Great burrito and they didn't even question my no cheese or sour cream like they did in Australia, yummy strawberry margarita (non-alcoholic this time) and music: they were playing Dave Bruback (fav jazz muscian) last night so i'm happy.
Such a rarity of course comes with a price tag. Its funny but when bill come to $300 i proclaimed 'wow this is expensive' til it was pointed out that was about Australian $30 each. Still the most exensive meal i've had in HK so far.
Now if i only i could remember where exactly in Wan Chai it was or what it was called.

The weekend is already looking busy
Friday night I will be meeting up with some other xpats at a bar in Lan Kwai Fong (the place to hang apparently).
Saturday: Michael and i will most probably do something before he leaves for Korea.
Sunday: Emily has volunteered to show me around Mongkok (which is the area where i will be working).
Not bad considering it is only Thursday and my first week in Hong Kong.
Today view: rain, rain and more rain. I can't see much through the fog but its still purrrrty

Gorgeous
I layed down in bed last night and watched the rain from the apartment window so that i could actually see the rain falling from beneath.
It has to be one of the most stunning things i've ever seen.

Hectic
This afternoon on the phone to Michael.
M: "if your around Pacific place at 8pm i'll be there"
K: "ok i'll see you there"
So i take my time have dinner, look in the bookstore, just waste time til its gets to 8pm.
At 8.05pm i call him thinking maybe he said nine.
M: i'm there now.
K: where are you?
M: the first floor.
K: I'll come up, meet me on the ground floor out the front?
M: ok call me back when you get there
M: where are you?
K: out the front
M: come back inside
K: ok *walk inside*
M: i think i can see you, what store are you near?
K: Versace
M: what others stores are you near?
K: Um theres only one other store here
M: are you near the piano?
K: (lightbulb: theres a piano at pacific place where i was shopping yesterday) Oh Oh
what shopping centre are you at?
M: Pacific Place, where are you?
K Not at Pacific Place!
I was in fact at Time Square i'm not sure why i thought he was at Time square instead of Pacific Place, i guess since they are both major shopping centres. However they are also in different suburbs its like me getting Southland and Chadstone shopping centres confused.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have a 'introduction to Cantonese' lesson tommorrow night. I've also inquired about volunteering with Animals Asia. Between volunteering for an organisation, shopping, Cantonese lessons, and Wing Chun lessons i'm not sure where i'm going to fit in time to work.

It would be so easy
To get sucked into consumerism here.
To spend every dollar you have buying the latest technological items, clothes, jewelry, and accessories for everything.
To shop, shop, and shop till you can't shop no more.
To buy a million gifts for everyone.
To never save any money.
Yes i went shopping yesterday.
First with Michael to get a mobile phone, well thats a necessity considering i'm practically living alone in a strange country.
Then after dinner with Emily to look for a new bag, im looking for an over the shoulder big-ish one for traveling on the MTR (translate: train) since i now don't have a car to throw everything into. She took me to all these little shopping malls up on the second and third levels of buildings that i would normally just dismiss as yet another office building. We found only about 30 bags that fit my description and a thousand other items that i don't need but would be nice to own. I love the variety of items here: the funky clothes and jewelry especially.
Yes i need to be careful here with my money, with my spare time.
I'm off shopping now to find a filofax since i never found my old one and i need to work out a budget asap.

I've arrived
I'm sitting here typing this on my gorgeous new computer in my new home.
I left yesterday to my joking family and Marisa. We were all very much determined not to cry except for Casey who commented on how they are are all in denial or something to that affect, she was the only with visible tears in her eyes. It seems that she was right as not long after i had hugged them all and left i started to cry. Tears that i wouldn't let fall down my face but that were certianly there. I called them up and many of them seemed to be crying. Apparently Laura started crying and they all followed.
As soon as i plane left i felt excited about the prospect of going to live somewhere which was so unfamilar to me. My first thoughts on arrrival in Hong Kong where that i forgot how surreal Hong Kong is at night, i forgot about the buzz, the people who are out so late, the neon lights that make Hong Kong more lit up than it probably is during the day. I sat in my new lounge room and stared out the window for so long. At night we have one of the most gorgeous views across victoria harbour. There were boats coming and going, a mulitude of colourful lights including a multi coloured building which i'm determined to find out more about. My room is not much bigger than a cardboard box but right now i don't care. The kitchen is well a sauna, i'm going to have to work something out there. But it seems to be all mine for cooking: i have a meat free kitchen by default. At the moment the fridge looks more like a bar fridge there is nothing in there but drinks: fruit juice (my defintion of cordial), bottled water, coke, and various other soft drinks. That however changed when i unloaded my food bag with so many vegan chocolates that i'm sure i will have chocolate to eat to eat very day for months (thanks again Marisa).
I looked out the bedroom window before sleeping and i seem to have an equally stunning view in my bedroom. I can see right along the other side of Hong Kong. Below the window is some sort of network of freeways and even at midnight before i slept there seemed to be sort of traffic jam. As i was beginning to fall asleep there was thunder and lightening. The thunder was a little scary at first it sounded like what i would think bombs would sound like if they went off (not that i have any idea really). But the lightening was incredible and the sound of the heavy rainfall while it was so hot just seemed so beautiful to me.
I've since woke up and looked out the loungeroom window again and there are still so many cars on the road even at 8.30am on a Sunday. Amongst the freeways directly in front of the apartment block there is a loop (almost like a giant roundabout) and between the loop there is a garden with what seems to be rock statues, a waterfall and the greenest of plants which look much like hedges from here. I wonder how i would get to it from here and add it to the list of things i want to explore in Hong Kong.
Today i am on my own for most of the day. I think i will explore a little but not go too far. I want to take all the detail and the feel of the place bit by bit. Tonight Michael has arranged a welcome dinner for me with himself, Aaron, Emily, and Graham. Both Aaron and Graham are Australia expats. Emily however is a local and from the look of it seems to be very popular. I can see why: shes very friendly and has already promised to take me shopping.
It seems at the moment that Hong Kong can do no wrong, not even my tiny room can spoil my mood. I will try to post later on in the day and see if that has changed.
